Local Heritage Assistance Fund - Application for Financial Assistance

Applications now open for Heritage Grants.

Council, with the assistance of the Heritage Branch of the Department of Planning, has been successful in receiving funding to continue the Local Heritage Assistance Fund in the 2008-2009 financial year. The Local Heritage Assistance Fund has been established to assist in the conservation and restoration of buildings or items that are of heritage significance within the Bellingen Shire Council area.

Owners of buildings or items that are of heritage significance, particularly those listed as being of heritage significance in the Bellingen Shire Heritage Study 1992, are invited to apply for assistance for restoration projects.  Such projects may involve the repair or maintenance of items and can include reinstatement of missing items on heritage buildings.

This year, the Bellingen Shire Local Heritage Committee would like to again encourage owners of non-residential heritage items to apply for funding.  Examples of works that may be financially supported by the fund include the restoration/ reinstatement of original fences of significance or rarity, restoration of outbuildings or agricultural/ industrial buildings identified as being of significance in the 1992 Bellingen Shire Heritage Study (particularly those visible from a public road) such as timber mills, milk stands, silos, cow bails, workers cottages, commercial buildings in Dorrigo or interpretive projects at significant historical sites (where public access is available).

The Scheme has funds available in 2008-2009 which are to be distributed in small grants up to a maximum of $1,500 on a dollar for dollar basis. Applicants for projects requiring funding in excess of $1,500 should not be discouraged from applying for consideration under the program.  Potential applicants are advised that the works will need to be completed by the end of April 2009.

Applications close 31 July 2008 and notifications of successful grants will be made after consideration of applications by the Bellingen Shire Local Heritage Committee in August. Information requirements for applications can be discussed with Council's Acting Senior Planner Ms Melanie Green. Appointments can also be made by contacting Ms Green on 6655 7330.
